A review of where to Ski in the Area

Beech Hill Park (off the top of Walker Road) is a series of trails and loops that is usually machine groomed. There is a large open field that is cold on windy days but the rest is in the woods. The longest single loop is about 6 km. This is a great place for families.

Blue North, also on Walker Road, but on the other side of the highway from Beech Hill Park. Start across from the gate to the reservoir. It's about 500 m from the highway overpass. This is never groomed, but many avid skiers pack it. The trail can be up to 15 km, but it depends on the energy levels of those avid skiers. This is a great 1 - 3 hour outing, but it crosses some ATV and snowmobile trails, so you may have to search for the continuation of the ski trail. Some of views, such as the look-off, are worth the trek.

King Street has a few trails that cross it. The one previously mentioned starts 500 m past the Sackville Animal Clinic. Some folks also go on the snowmobile trail for skate-skiing, but be careful of snowmobilers. I'm told that early morning is best for these trails, due to minimal traffic.

Sunday update:

We went to Grande Digue, and discovered that the ski club was closed, due to lack of snow. I guess we had a lot more snow than those West of us. We made a quick stop in Cocagne at Melanson's general store (Rona Hardware). They have one of the larger selections of skis, wax, clothing etc, this side of Halifax.

On the way home we skied at Beech Hill Park, and the conditions were OK. Lots of bare spots, but should be a lot better tomorrow. Of course, we saw at least one ATV :-(

For those who haven't tried it, I would also recommend a night ski at Centennial Park in Moncton. It's on St George Boulevard.

We skied Blue North (start across from the water reservoir road, on Walker Road) yesterday. The trail is broken for about 7 km, and has some barren patches. We have 15 cm of snow predicted for tomorrow, so it should be perfect. Off to Grande Digue this afternoon.

Finally got out, even though Elizabeth, Anne & Kate have been out in these freezing temperatures for the past few days. King Street (about 500m past the Sackville Animal Clinic) seems to be the only trail that's been cleared so far. With warmer temperatures, I expect a lot of people will be skiing, so post the trail conditions here.

We are planning on taking the kids to Le Castor club in Grande Digue on Saturday afternoon, and will tell you how it is. It's one of the clubs listed on NB Trails site (see 10 Jan posting).
